What are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners therapy uses a series of plastic trays, or aligners, to incrementally move your teeth from one position to another. Because of this, clear aligners are often called clear braces. These clear braces are made by melting down plastic and using a 3D printer to print and create each aligner.

Invisalign® isn’t the only brand of aligners. Much like Kleenex® is the name a lot of us call facial tissues, Invisalign® is just one of many brands out there. It has a lot of name recognition, but there are other great alternatives that work just as well and may fit your needs better during this process.

Am I a Candidate for Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are specifically designed for the controlled movement of teeth without obstruction from metal brackets and wires, however, they are not meant to treat every patient’s case. Contact our office to see if you are a candidate for clear aligners.

Brookhaven Orthodontics is a provider of clear braces both from Spark Clear Aligners and Invisalign.

More FAQs about Clear Aligners in Brookhaven and Alpharetta

Teeth move due to consistent pressure being applied over time. Which means you need to wear your aligners for 20-22 hours every day. Aligners should be removed when you eat, drink, and brush your teeth. Treatment may take longer if you don’t wear your aligners consistently.

Many people don’t expect to have something attached to their teeth when wearing clear aligners. Most people will need these. The purpose of attachments is to help your trays stay in place on your teeth to make sure your aligners are applying the pressure in the correct places. This allows the aligners to correctly shift your teeth.

One of the benefits about choosing clear aligners for your orthodontic treatment is that they are easy to adjust to and will not drastically affect your every day life.

It is important to take care of your aligners and keep them clean. When not wearing your aligners, make sure to put them in their case to prevent misplacing them or accidentally throwing them away.

To brush and floss your teeth, simply remove your clear aligners and place them in your case. Brush and floss normally. If you have attachments, follow the instructions given by Dr. Cox.

To clean or brush your aligners, use the suds on your toothbrush from brushing your teeth and gently rub them over the aligners. We do not recommend putting large amounts of toothpaste on the aligners and do not boil them. This could damage the aligner and could delay your treatment time.

Remember to change out your aligners as directed by Dr. Cox to stay on track with your treatment plan. If you happen to break or lose an aligner, please contact us and we will give you more instructions.

The initial scan and treatment plan will get you into the right ballpark. However, it is important to have an orthodontist supervising your treatment in order to make sure that mid-course corrections are made. This is because each person is a unique individual and you orthodontist can keep tabs on the way your teeth are moving to fine tune the treatment as you progress. This will result in a more beautiful smile.

As we mentioned, there are a variety of options for clear braces out there. We offer InBrace (invisible) braces, clear braces, and clear aligners as treatment options. Brookhaven Orthodontics offers two specific types clear aligner options: Invisalign® and Spark™ clear aligners. These two forms of treatment involve going through a series of aligners to straighten your teeth. You can find more information about their differences by clicking the links below:

Dr. Stan Cox will recommend a specific treatment option for you after your initial exam and will let you know if you are a candidate for other treatment types.

Remove your aligners and put them in your case before eating. It is important to not eat or chew gum with the aligners in so that you do not damage them.

We suggest only drinking water while wearing your aligners. If you want to drink a dark liquid like coffee or soda, you will need to remove the aligners to avoid staining.
